Platform Engineer (Defence / MOD)

Contract Outside IR35 - £475-500pd 

Farnborough (Hybrid) 3 days a week on site 

3 months initially 

We are seeking experienced Platform Engineers to support secure defence and MOD programmes. These outside IR35 contracts are ideal for engineers who thrive on building and operating resilient platforms in highly regulated, security-cleared environments, including hybrid and air-gapped systems. You will work within platform and DevOps teams dedicated to automation, reliability, and operational excellence, contributing to the design, delivery, and improvement of critical platform services.

You will have the opportunity to influence standards, tooling, and best practices across the organisation, while helping shape the architecture and operational approach for MOD applications and secure platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance platform services across hybrid environments

  • Improve and standardise automated deployment and CI/CD pipelines

  • Strengthen observability, monitoring, and proactive operations

  • Support incident response, troubleshooting, and service improvements

  • Provide guidance on platform patterns, tooling, and best practices

  • Contribute to architectural decisions and technical governance

  • Share knowledge and support capability uplift across teams

Required Experience

We are looking for candidates with a strong background in Platform Engineering, DevOps, or Infrastructure Engineering, and proven experience in secure, regulated, or MOD environments.

Essential skills include:

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - automating platform provisioning and configuration

  • AWS - hands-on experience deploying and managing cloud infrastructure

  • OpenShift & Kubernetes - configuring clusters, building containers, and managing repositories

  • CI/CD pipelines - building and improving automated deployment processes

  • Monitoring & Observability - implementing proactive monitoring across platforms

  • Automation of platform components - ensuring reliable, repeatable operations

  • Secure by Design - experience delivering platforms aligned with MOD security standards

  • MOD Applications - understanding how defence applications operate within secure platforms

  • Security Clearance - must be in place prior to appointment
